Shebeen 14 Panthers 17

The Shebeen Boys went down 17-14 to the Panthers on Wednesday but may yet qualify for the semi-finals.

The Panthers’ call for uncontested scrums from the first set-piece could lead to them forfeiting the result. Frikkie Erasmus, the lawyer responsible for finding the loophole in Jaque Fourie’s Lions contract, is fighting the legal battle in the court room. An insider informs us that the judge is a fan of Guinness, so Shebeen are likely to be pushed through.

It was a game of two halves, the Shebeen Boys generously handing the Panthers a 12-0 head start. The first try was soft and the second a gift, but somehow the men in green managed to turn things around.

Devon van Schalkwyk edged Jacques Loftus in the linebreaking stakes, exposing some weak Panthers’ defence to score Shebeen’s first try. After a belligerent build-up, the Been Boys crashed over for a second, lock David Swart using the Inspector Gadget arms to place the ball over the whitewash.

Flyhalf Chris Rood kicked both conversions, but unfortunately Shebeen couldn’t convert any further opportunities. The Panthers scored another softie when they broke blind off another uncontested scrum.

This fixture will have given the Shebeen Boys a lot of confidence ahead of the Villagers fixture on Saturday. If you can plan running rugby on UCT fields, you can play running rugby anywhere. The fourths’ defence better be sharp.

  1. well so much for that confidence then!!!

Hard luck boys, see you all on Sat.

  2. I’m flatered that you think I scored. But that first try was all Devon. He did put me in a gap at one point in the match, but being a prop I was over come with shock at being in space and I fell over. Thats my story and I’m sticking to it!

  3. Inspector Gadget arms you say? haha can’t wait for the semi’s!!
