Shebeen 12 Marquard 10
The Shebeen Boys began the Internal League with a morale-boosting 12-10 win over Marquard.
Not much was known about the new- look res side, and the way Shebeen started this fixture, a bonus point seemed a formality. A powerful maul from the lineout left Marquard backtracking, and Siv Ngesi finally emerged for what was a great forward try.
Ngesi, the undisputed Man of the Match, scored his second try shortly after. The Marquard defence failed to hang on to the elusive flanker, and once he’d beaten all would-be tacklers, he sprinted all of 40m to score. Tyrone Fouche added the extras.
Marquard managed to score a soft try of their own, and a conversion and penalty on the stroke of half-time brought them closer to Shebeen’s tally. Shebeen had the benefit of the wind in the second half, but did not use this to their advantage despite numerous opportunities.
It must be said that when the Been Boys received a kickable penalty, they opted to attack. It should also be noted that the defence showed a big improvement since the four-team tournament last Sunday, and this is definitely a performance to build on before the Nadoes clash in two weeks time.
Finesmaster Kyle handled the first official Tunnel Session of the season, with the most prestigious prize going to Devon van Schalkwyk and Mark-Bowen Davies for their hand-holding effort. Special mentions go to Trevor Padayachee for his mammoth performance at the scrum, Coach Pete for his beard, and the relentless tackling exhibition by Mark Vallance.
