Fourths.com Vs Shebeen Boys: 2011

Dear Shebeen,

2011 sees the hosts, the Fourths.com eager to come back from a dismal performance last year by beating the Shebeen Boys at Villagers RFC tomorrow. However, the Shebeen Boys are certainly not going to willingly lay down and take it. Both teams are having mixed seasons, playing wonderful rugby but not getting the results that they deserve.

After a bit of a break, Shebeen will be eager to get back on that field and stretch their legs, hopefully all the way across the line. Team Captain, Shaun “Pikey” Fickling will be leading the team for the first time against the old foe.We see the return of powerhouse centre pairing Devon “Devzo 6″ van Schalkwyk and Matthew “Ogre” Elsworth, along with the comeback of the prodigal son himself, Kyle “Smeagol” Williamson.

With some solid ball from the forwards setting the platform, the Shebeen backline could wreak some major havoc tomorrow.

Yes, that’s right, some of you will remember the thrashing Shebeen gave theFourths.com last year in our annual derby.

TWENTY SIX points to… ZERO!

A hiding to nothing. A thorough win. It was a super fantastic special day out. Don’t you want to be a part of that?
Shebeen owe it to themselves to spoil another Fourths.com party.
Let me spell it out for you. The only way Shebeen can achieve that again, is to have a team ready and available for THIS Saturday June 18 at VILLAGERS for a 2PM kick off. Meet at 1pm, bring a good game, party attitude and cash for compulsory fines

and for your subs!
False Bay will be playing at the club so it WILL be a festive day out. You can make it more festive by being there.
So come on chaps, get your replies to Richie and let’s do this.

Shebeen SSC and the College of Whisky tasting evening

Sometime ago, April 15 to be precise, The Shebeen AKA Mowbray Bowls Club hosted Shebeen SSC and the College of Whisky for an introductory tasting evening.

It was meant to be a much needed FUND raiser for Shebeen but the turnout lacked words, but for the few who made it on the night, a lovely night was had.
Thanks to Chris ‘Cappie’ Rood for organising and to the College for great presentation. Also well done to the prize winners. Great kit was won.

Just shows you that you have to be involved and in it to win it. Go green, go Shebeen! Check out the pictures.

Happy birthday to … John or Jon? Or does anyone know this guy?

That’s right gents. Today marks the birthdate of someone we should know and should see regularly, but has been missing very much lately.

This man was our esteemed match report writer (watch this space, about to make a return), also our reliable fifteen and also served on the committee.
A committee, you say? Yes, Shebeen has one, so if you are keen, drop a mail to one of the addresses on the site.

Anyway, Jon ‘JC’ Cardinelli, hope you have a lekker day and that Ryan or someone at Keo’s offices brought you a cake.

Happy birthday Jon!

Congrats to Cappie and Sparky

Thanks to our two impressive members, we’ve made an appearance on Tank Lanning’s Front Row Grunt. It’s a blog about rugby. It’s awesome.
Well done chaps, on the work put in for the event last year and for the follow up by visiting the injured Aubrey.

Of heart warming fightbacks …
Sun 22 May 2011, 20:14

Well, that was a pretty spicy rugby weekend, and apart from the snoozy Sharks, it will be a weekend that Bok coach Peter de Villiers will be pretty pleased with. Let’s be honest, there is no way he is going to be dropping the likes of Matfield, Botha, Rossouw, Spies, Du Preez, Steyn and Hougaard from his Bok squad, so for the Bulls to be getting a little bit of that confident swagger back into their game, can only be good for Springbok rugby …

But for us fans, I reckon it was all about the remarkable comebacks from the Stormers, Blitzbokke (down 14-0 at one stage against Fiji in the London sevens final) and Leinster (to win the Heineken Cup against Northampton) … Sevens is a slightly different kettle of fish, but both fifteens sides were as good as dead and buried in the first half, only to find some sort of resolve to come back and win games of rugby that will definitely sneak onto that “100 best games of Rugby Union” DVD we all dream about.

And for the Stormers to do it against the table topping Blues with Dewaldt Duwenhage at flyhalf after Lionel Cronje got injured in the 7th minute, and with the inexperienced Juan de Jongh and Johann Sadie at centre, is even more remarkable. No wonder people were calling for Schalk Burger to be made Bok captain for the rugby World Cup … The lesson learnt being that it is 100% fine to rely on the young guns waiting in the wings when the big guns get crocked!

Speaking of inspirational fight backs … I had the true privilege of visiting Aubrey Saal on Friday afternoon. As blogged last week, Aubrey is 24 years old and was badly injured when asked to fill in at hooker for the Desert Daisies Rugby Club in late 2010. He suffered a neck injury and is now quadriplegic, yet with a fair amount of upper body movement luckily.

The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Fund have arranged for Aubrey to receive proper care and rehabilitation at the Western Cape Rehab Centre in Lentegeur. And this is where Bok forward coach Gary Gold and I found ourselves on Friday. Ali Williams of the fund, via the hard working Shebeen Boys, invited me to visit the centre, so I asked Gary if he would be interested in coming to see what goes on out there.

As quick as a flash Gary said he was in, and not only in, but in with a monster bag filled with WP, Stormers and Bok memorabilia for Aubrey. A bag that included a brand new ABSA branded Bok jersey signed by all the Boks that went on the EOYT! What a special moment it was to see that handed to Aubrey, who despite all he has been through, is still a big rugby fan …

Aubrey seems to have no regrets, and remains incredibly passionate about both rugby and life. He would like to start studying again and said he is keen to become a home care giver or a social worker like the ones who supported him at his home and in the hospital. He also told Gary that he is keen on getting involved in coaching rugby in some sort of way …

Talk about putting things in perspective … And teaching one to not take the simple yet good things we have in our lives for granted … The Chris Burger Petro Jackson fund really do change people’s lives!

Thanks Tank.

Sharks take recent losses in their “stride”

Vibrating pleasure rings bearing branding similar to two provincial rugby teams are causing a stir.

The cheeky items, created by STA Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Engineering, feature either a blue bull or a shark on the packaging. They went on sale ahead of Saturday’s match.

However, Sean Armstrong, who is behind the concept, said the product was designed with tongue firmly in cheek.

“Some will laugh and some will take it the wrong way. It’s more about the novelty of the item than its actual use as a pleasure ring.”

On a possible trademark infringement, he said he hoped rugby bosses would see the humour in the rings, but his company was prepared for a legal battle if it boiled down to it.

After the much-publicised Tiger Woods sex scandal, Armstrong and his team capitalised on the hype by launching the Tiger’s Wood Pack, which contains condoms and sex enhancements.

“We had a legal battle then with Tiger’s law firm and if we have a similar situation with the rugby bosses, then we are prepared for that.”

Armstrong said sales had exceeded expectations and the first batch of Blouhoring and Shark Attack pleasure rings had sold out.

Sharks chief executive Brian van Zyl said that although he had not seen the items, he disapproved of them.

“All our licences are approved by Signet (licensing and marketing agent). But we would never, ever want the Sharks brand to be associated with something like that,” he said.

Blue Bulls chief executive Barend van Graan agreed, saying he would not want the franchise brand linked to pleasure rings.

“I don’t know anything about it yet, but I will look into it. We have got an agreement with Signet, who handle the licensing of our merchandise.”

Van Graan said all items representing the Bulls brand had to be cleared by the management. – Daily News (source)

Internal League break and what you need to do

Howdy chaps.

Well done on the first half of your internal league season at the green mile that is UCT.

Some mixed bag results, but good signs shown as well as good chunder sessions in the tunnel.

As some of you should know, it is now UCT study break, then exam time and then holiday time, so for the next three months nothing will be going on. Ok, just kidding, we resume internal league on 27 July. Diarise that date. Richard, your unknown chairman will be organising a game or two or three between now and then. So stay in touch and in tune with the sms’ and the website.

Games to look forward to: The annual derby against the Windhoek Fourths.com (Trounced them 26 – 0 last year. Who can forget?) and the ever impressive Hamilton’s fourths/social side. Both games will be tough encounters on and off the field. (by the way, that is if the Windhoek Fourths.com’s chairman gets off his arse to organise the game)

But in the meantime, playing internal league does not come free. We at Shebeen HQ have had to pay up for the league entrance and your jersey that you will proudly own at the end of the season. So the time has come for you to return the favour and pay your subs.

If you have any sponsorship leads or fundraising ideas, please drop us a line. Don’t forget, pay your subs and get involved in Shebeen Social Sports Club.

See ya

Which one is our guy?

Most of you probably won’t know which is our guy actually. You probably have not met the guy or even seen him around. I vaguely remember Murray Turner being a part of Shebeen Boys rugby way back when. I think he even owns the number 71 on the Shebeen member list. Can you tell which one is Murray?
