Who left a tree on my stoep?

I went for a walk round my neighbourhood a couple of evenings ago and saw this! It is officially one of the strangest things I’ve seen in a long time. The garage and driveway looked like they had been around for a while, so the question is “Why the hell did they build it behind a huge tree?” Unless the tree suddenly sprung up over night – which I doubt! Any guesses?

    OK I have a fairly geeky theory. But it looks like a yellow wood, which are a protected species of tree.
    I suspect they started building and then were told by some tree huggers that they were not allowed to chop the tree down and are now waiting for it to die of old age.
    I can give them a few pointers on how to poisen a tree if they want.
