The Shebeen Boys cemented their position at the top of the log with a 17-0 victory over a highly rated opponent. Possession in the first 5 minutes belonged to the medics but Shebeen knocked them back in every tackle, keeping them in their own half. Before long Shebeen turned over the ball and started a sustained period of attack on the opposition goal line. Some poor (early season) handling kept the scoreline at 0-0 but thanks to an immense showing from the Shebeen front row, winning 7 tightheads in a row, possession was not a problem. It was only a matter of time. The first try came straight from one of these scrums, on the right hand side of the field. Some slick handling from the back line produced an overlap and Karl Spartan Meiring scored untouched in the corner, his second in consecutive games. Rich Stemcell Stemmet casually nailed another touchline conversion to make it 7-0. After the kickoff, the Shebeen domination continued. Before long they had a line-out in their own 22. The medics hooker threw the ball long and Brent Bobby Light poached it, beat a few defenders and produced what could be a candidate for offload of the season to put Karl Bergemann over for the try. Stemmet narrowly missed the conversion and Shebeen went into half-time leading 12-0.

The second half was a scrappy effort, as the Shebeen handling and decision-making continued to let us down. Defense was a different story altogether, as the medics could not penetrate the Shebeen line. On the one occasion they did break through, a stellar cover tackle from Siv Ngesi robbed them of a certain 5 points. 10 minutes before the end of the game and the Shebeen bench came on, making an immediate impact. From scrappy ball on the left hand side of the field the ball went through the hands to the Ogre, who left a trio of medics for dead in a 50m run before offloading to Spartan who put Ferghus The flying Scotsman over the corner. Kyle Williamson stepped up and just missed the conversion, much to the surprise of the team and coaching staff who were certain that he’d embarrass himself. 17-0 the final score. Another victory, another clean sheet.

Well it has taken time to stomach the defeat to the Panthers. Well done to them for beating us 8-7 in the Internal League Plate Final on Wed 21 Sept. Damn it was so close. So nailbitingly close. Rather like the Boks loss on Sunday. I know what they feel like, the better team dominated everything, except the scoreboard. Unfortunately that is how sport and rugby goes.

Nevermind that, we can only watch and wonder what will happen next. Go Wales.

The end of season function will be happening soon. Notice will come out soon. But regarding that, if I don’t get the jerseys back from the final – YOU will know who you are – there won’t be an end of the season function. So don’t be a doos and ruin it for your mates. Just message me and fess up.

One that goes over most of your heads, but one that you should all take note of and respect. A special year chaps. And it wouldn’t happen without the legacy the older guys have left for you. Understand it, accept it and appreciate it.

Over the years at Shebeen Boys, we have seen a number of talented folk grow and exceed expectation. We obviously have our resident star, Siv Ngesi, who is making a name for himself as a diverse and classy entertainer. We have the likes of Wazza T, Rolfie Fitschen, and Mark (Boner)-Davies who have graced the big screen with the likes of Matt Damon. We even have a singer or two in our midst, with Baywatch Bergemann making a bit of a name for himself in the local Idols series.

But so far, none have come close to being so magnificent that they are famous for, well, being in a photo… We have a couple of nominations here obviously, which have been wittled down to the final two…

Runner up is a gent that makes his mark on the beaches of Cape Town. A beast of a man with long, curly hair, I can absolutely see why he might be sought after for photoshoots, calendars and whatnot. This man is Shebeen lock, Robert Raw

Well done Rob… But there is another Shebeen schmoooodel that deserves this award. He is a newcomer to the industry. But what an impact this lad is having!! While some languish in the corridors, scoring online photoshoots and small time calendars, this Shebeen Boys has jumped right to the front of the queue, with a photoshoot for…. Gents

Short and sweet this week, as there is no competition for Pink Pants… Though Kyle Smeagol Williamson gave it a bit of a go with his “I have problems, I want to hurt people, so I will get amped and fired to sit on the sideline and not get on the park”, and Matthew Ogre Elsworth definitely deserves a mention for his special performance on Friday night at Le Tigre (If I hear “Rich, you look like you want a tie” again…), there is one clear winner.

This is probably a story best left to the tunnel. But it does involve a girl. And her mum. I won’t say anymore. Oh, and it does involve a window. And other sensitive subjects. But seriously, no more from me, other than…
