Gov’s take on last weeks game

Due to unforeseen technical difficulties, the memories of last weeks game have been reduced to

(a) Rood scoring
(b) Guv getting binned
(c) Guv losing his temper with all and sundry
(d) Rood scoring
(e) Rood scoring again…
(f) Gary’s “at least we’re getting silver” motivational teamtalk…
(g) Rood’s Fiance being our first cheer leader…
(h) Roods Fiance being the only girl at after game drinks…

i will record next tonight’s action so I actually have a record of what happened and do a proper, fitting write up for Friday…

The Shebeen 300 Story

Boy do I have a story for you… About the time the Shebeen 300 (or four) took on the 40,000,000 Hurricanes (or 6 guys and 2 girls) in an epic encounter of guts, sweat, skill, fitness and epic-ness…. Let’s start at the beginning… Set the scene… Sun shining onto golden, hallowed grass (skip the colour issues and go with the scene already)… Birds singing in the background (at choir practice)… Harps carrying sweet music on the wings of the wind (they practice at the same time apparently)…

Our four proud warriors strode manfully onto the field (ok, i was limping slightly and Junior has a slight skip in his jog, but otherwise it was pretty manly)… The spirit of defiance and energy of the pre-game motivational speech was ringing in our ears (Queue voice over from Any Given Sunday about the inches (No Gary, not THOSE inches))… Yep, The opposition was quivering before us (or laughing, but I’m going with quivering). The coin toss (choose the grass rusta style) happened in the blink of an eye… Junior though was trained to scent grass at 70 paces in a howling gale told Gov which hand the grass was in… Boom, we chose to kick off. Boom try. Yes, that fast. Chris got the ball and before Anyone could say aren’t you engaged he was though a gap 2 Vela’s wide and had dotted down… Magic…

A few phases later, Junior got the ball and with no options and in no space. Somehow, he found the willpower and the drive to round the entire team (theirs and ours)… TRY!!! 2-0 to the good guys… The crowds were on the feet (those who got to the game on time)… Over the roar a voice was said to say, ” Ok Murphy, you’re in charge now”…. And so it was…

bla bla bla…

Solo and Guv put on a passing and moving play that was only ever witnessed never before and BANG, try… Not so said the referee. Touch after grounding the ball, no try. We even tried P-Divvy logic on him, but our magical moment was rubbed out like Tiger Woods’ estate after being hit with a driver…

other stuff…

and our intrepid heroes were down 3-2… Defiance was written all over their faces. Some guy in blue face paint rode a horse over the field yelling something about Scotland… What a weirdo. We had to wait for him to leave before we continued. Rude (The computer doesn’t accept Rood) had a party with Junior on the one side of the field (apparently it’s a move called a Rock and Roll… whatever…)… Cleverly passing the ball whenever a man/person/dog/blade of grass approached them, they “gave the ball air” and wham bam thank you Pamela Anderson for Baywatch moments, TRY!!! David Copperfield called to say he was never more inspired… 3-3 with 2 moves to play….

other stuff happened, so our heroes went into half time 4-3 down…

Queue inspiring team talk from “remember the Titans”….

They kicked off. Ball turnover… Chris gets the ball, passes to Junior… TRY!! We dunno how it happened either, but high 5′s were done after that…

More play, amazing play from them, godlike play from us…

We actually don’t know how often they passed, so this was a guess. It was a lot though. So many passes the speed of light took a double look… TRY!!! 6-6…. AMA-ZING (new from KFC)…

Guv and Solo tried to do a rock on role but failed epically (we tried twice, failed twice-enough said)… Intercept, against the run of play, 7-6 to the “canes. Against the run of play it must be said… The opposition’s heads were just beginning to drop before that play. We heard murmurs of steroid use and Spies like physiques…

Last move of the game. Guv to Solo with Junior running a strange dummy angle to the cougar on the sidelines… *awkward silence*… Anyway, Solo held up the ball drawing them into the pocket… Then let off a Bullet pass (no, not like James Dalton) straight to Rude, in space, who rounded the defender before heading for the try-line 30 m away. The crowed Cheered, Nelson Mandela wept, Bra’s were thrown (not by us), Chuck Norris even smiled… *Whistle blast*… Touch pass, penalty to the Canes. Gasps of amazement from all. Guv spluttered something about destroying our hail Mary happy ending, but to no avail… Penalty with the last move to play… They took the touch, game over…. Personally, i felt more let down than the Hindenberg…

that was the story about how we made the Semi’s gentlemen. How 4 stood when no others were available…. How the 4 fought them on the beaches, on the fields, in the air…. We never stopped fighting, we never surrendered… We were called the famous four for a while, before we heard of some trade mark infringement, but we’re toying with a new name…

Three more days remain until we do the raffle draw. As yet the response has been piss poor!! This is a fund raising event were ALL proceeds go to the Pedro Jackson fund. Do we really want to hand them a cheque of only R1000…..buy tickets please guys, sell tickets…they R10

Pete is organising a cricket tour to Knysna on the 22nd of November. It will be a once off game on one of the Pezula fairways. If you able to make it, please drop an email to both Gary and Sparky ( gary @shebeenboys.co.za & sparky @shebeenboys.co.za). Galetti Fourths members are free to join as well.

There’s been mentioned of another waterpolo game versus the Galetti Fourths. Suggested date has been set as either the 15th or 16th of November. If you keen, please drop and email to both Gary and Sparky again.

Rugby season is officially over. Touch will still however be held at Lutgensvale on Sundays at 15h30. Remember to keep fit boys (or at least try); the Social World Cup is around the corner!!

Most importantly, keep an eye on the website for other events (soccer, cricket, paintball, etc) that will be happening in the off season.

6-down season comes to an end

This season’s 6-down team found themselves in the uncharted territory of the First Division and then later on the Super League. How we got there nobody knows (must’ve been our extreme talent) but the boys fought hard every Wednesday to try topple the top teams of the competition – unfortunately not having at least 3 Western Province or South African 6-down players in our team made it pretty difficult…

Besides that, well played guys!! Coming fourth (and beating the fourths.com) out of about 25 teams is awesome.

The next season will start on the 31st of January 2008. Anyone keen to participate please let Mike or myself know ASAP so that we can make arrangements.

6-Down Action

Last night saw the boys play their first game of 6-down. Having missed the first 3 fixtures due to internal league commitments it was bound to be an interesting game.

Of a squad of 14 players, only 3 arrived – not a good start. We somehow managed to scrape together a full team with 2 reserves, only to find out we were up against a super league team with 6-down springbok players as well as one ex-springbok, Robbie Fleck.

Due to this ‘mismatch’ we were given a 5 try head start and managed to keep this ‘lead’ until the final whistle.

Final score: 3 – 1 to Shark Cage which turns out to be 6 – 3 to Shebeen SSC
