Well it has taken time to stomach the defeat to the Panthers. Well done to them for beating us 8-7 in the Internal League Plate Final on Wed 21 Sept. Damn it was so close. So nailbitingly close. Rather like the Boks loss on Sunday. I know what they feel like, the better team dominated everything, except the scoreboard. Unfortunately that is how sport and rugby goes.

Nevermind that, we can only watch and wonder what will happen next. Go Wales.

The end of season function will be happening soon. Notice will come out soon. But regarding that, if I don’t get the jerseys back from the final – YOU will know who you are – there won’t be an end of the season function. So don’t be a doos and ruin it for your mates. Just message me and fess up.

Lastly, next year sees Shebeen Social Sports Club break through to new ground. 2012 will be our TENTH year of UCT Internal League. A milestone chaps. One that goes over most of your heads, but one that you should all take note of and respect. A special year chaps. And it wouldn’t happen without the legacy the older guys have left for you. Understand it, accept it and appreciate it.

It was meant to be a much needed FUND raiser for Shebeen but the turnout lacked words, but for the few who made it on the night, a lovely night was had.

Of heart warming fightbacks …

Well, that was a pretty spicy rugby weekend, and apart from the snoozy Sharks, it will be a weekend that Bok coach Peter de Villiers will be pretty pleased with. Let’s be honest, there is no way he is going to be dropping the likes of Matfield, Botha, Rossouw, Spies, Du Preez, Steyn and Hougaard from his Bok squad, so for the Bulls to be getting a little bit of that confident swagger back into their game, can only be good for Springbok rugby …

But for us fans, I reckon it was all about the remarkable comebacks from the Stormers, Blitzbokke (down 14-0 at one stage against Fiji in the London sevens final) and Leinster (to win the Heineken Cup against Northampton) … Sevens is a slightly different kettle of fish, but both fifteens sides were as good as dead and buried in the first half, only to find some sort of resolve to come back and win games of rugby that will definitely sneak onto that “100 best games of Rugby Union” DVD we all dream about.

And for the Stormers to do it against the table topping Blues with Dewaldt Duwenhage at flyhalf after Lionel Cronje got injured in the 7th minute, and with the inexperienced Juan de Jongh and Johann Sadie at centre, is even more remarkable. No wonder people were calling for Schalk Burger to be made Bok captain for the rugby World Cup … The lesson learnt being that it is 100% fine to rely on the young guns waiting in the wings when the big guns get crocked!

Speaking of inspirational fight backs … I had the true privilege of visiting Aubrey Saal on Friday afternoon. As blogged last week, Aubrey is 24 years old and was badly injured when asked to fill in at hooker for the Desert Daisies Rugby Club in late 2010. He suffered a neck injury and is now quadriplegic, yet with a fair amount of upper body movement luckily.

The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Fund have arranged for Aubrey to receive proper care and rehabilitation at the Western Cape Rehab Centre in Lentegeur. And this is where Bok forward coach Gary Gold and I found ourselves on Friday. Ali Williams of the fund, via the hard working Shebeen Boys, invited me to visit the centre, so I asked Gary if he would be interested in coming to see what goes on out there.

As quick as a flash Gary said he was in, and not only in, but in with a monster bag filled with WP, Stormers and Bok memorabilia for Aubrey. A bag that included a brand new ABSA branded Bok jersey signed by all the Boks that went on the EOYT! What a special moment it was to see that handed to Aubrey, who despite all he has been through, is still a big rugby fan …

Aubrey seems to have no regrets, and remains incredibly passionate about both rugby and life. He would like to start studying again and said he is keen to become a home care giver or a social worker like the ones who supported him at his home and in the hospital. He also told Gary that he is keen on getting involved in coaching rugby in some sort of way …

Talk about putting things in perspective … And teaching one to not take the simple yet good things we have in our lives for granted … The Chris Burger Petro Jackson fund really do change people’s lives!

The Windhoek Shebeen SSC are joined by SARugby.com, NewbieBowls, The Mowbray and brandhouse to form an initiative called the Players4Players foundation.

The Concept:

The idea is simple – if we can get together and raise awareness and a target of R25 000 for the Chris Burger / Petro Jackson fund, we’d be making a significant contribution and giving back to the game we love.

The FIRST Event:

The first event decided upon is a bowls fundraising day with players from the various clubs and schools in the province dressing in their rugby kit and coming down to play.

The day will include a barefoot bowl bowls competition, an auction with a number of fantastic items, a raffle, a braai, and the watching of the Springboks against Ireland on the 6th of November.

We’re asking for you to get together a team of 3 bowlers to come down – in your rugby jerseys or supporters gear – and get involved in a fun day with a serious message.

It has come a little bit earlier than expected this year. And with very little trash talk from the Fourths.com (surprisingly). Perhaps their egos are a bit bruised after last year’s game where Shebeen pushed the Fourths.com for the duration, eventually going down in a nailbiting 10-7 ballgame. I do not think I was the only one that noted the huge relief on the oppositions’ faces when that final whistle went…

So, it has fallen on us this year to host this derby game on The Green Mile, and it is going to be epic…

The Tale of the Tape

Last year, the Fourths were adamant that their bulkier forward unit were going to flatten our smaller, more mobile pack. Although they enjoyed unrivalled lineout ball (Thanks in no part to Shebeen treasurer and 18 foot monster jumper, Wazza), the Shebeen scrum and open play held its own and at times dominated the over- confident Village outfit. This year should be much the same, with a few well drafted additions strengthening the Shebeen forwards considerably. It should be a long day for the Fourths forwards.

For the backs, the opposition were convinced the Shebeen lineup were a one trick horse, with Chunderboy Rood being the only player on their radar. So it came as a surprise when Devon showed every one of them a clean pair of heels time and again. This year Shebeen have a backline that should make our rivals more than a little nervous. In any event, we now boast an International and I doubt any of them have played against a mythical creature before…
